Easter Story

Easter festival commemorated Jesus Christ’s resurrection. Christians believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead three days after his crucifixion and celebrate this resurrection on Easter Day or Easter Sunday , two days after Good Friday which precedes Easter Sunday (”Pascha”) and commemorates the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Golgotha.

Easter is a time of rebirth and resurrection. It was first celebrated by the pagans around the vernal equinox, welcoming spring. Easter is a moveable dates of the festival, in that it is not fall on a fixed date in the civil calendar. Easter falls at some point between late March to late April, following the cycle of the moon. All churches now accepted the computation of the Alexandrian Church (the Coptic Church) that Easter is the first Sunday after the Pascha Full Moon, which is the first moon whose 14th day is on or after March 21 or vernal equinox (the night and day are approximately equally long).

Easter Symbols

Traditions associated with the festival survive in the Easter rabbit, a symbol of fertility, new life and the rebirth that occurs during the spring season. And also associated in colored easter eggs, originally painted with bright colors to represent the sunlight of spring, used in Easter-egg rolling contests or given as gifts and used eggs to symbolize the rebirth of Christ. German settlers in America are said to have brought over the tradition of a bunny named “Oschter Haws” who would visit houses on Easter eve, leaving colored eggs for children.

Another Easter tradition is the eating of Hot Cross Buns (a sweet spiced bun made with currants or raisins and leavened with yeast). These cakes were marked by the Saxons to honor Eastre, the fertility goddess. The crosses on the buns are said to represent the moon’s quarters, while Christians see the cross as a reference to the crucifixtion.
Many cultural elements, such as the Easter Bunny, have become part of the holiday’s modern celebrations, and those aspects are often celebrated by many Christians and non-Christians alike.

Easter is a movable feast in christianity which means it is not fixed to a particular day of the calendar year. Normally, Western Easter dates occur on the first Sunday after the first full moon which is on or after March 21 ( vernal equinox). So Easter fall at some date between late March to early May each year.
